The purpose of this web site is to provide information about ourselves, as well as information pertinant to spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The church of Christ in Tucumcari is a family of believers who adhere to the Bible as our sole authority, Jesus Christ as our Lord, and we worship Him in Spirit and in Truth. We speak only where the Bible speaks, and honor the silence of the Word of God. Come join us for worship on the next First Day of the Week!

Times of Service & Directions

Our services on Sunday:
10:00 AM Sunday Morning for Bible Studies for all Ages
10:50 AM Sunday Morning for Worship Services
2:00 PM Sunday Afternoon for Worship Services

Recordings of Sunday lessons are available free of charge

Midweek Bible Study:
7:00 PM (6:00 PM during the winter) Wednesday Evening for Bible Studies for all Ages

We also have a Ladies Bible Study Wednesday morning at 10:00 AM, and other home Bible studies during the week.

CONTACT INFORMATION:

We Can Be Reached at: 575-461-3848 or PO Box 43 Tucumcari NM 88401 or TucumcariChurchofChrist@msn.com

Our Preacher is Brian Haines. Because of the confusion in many congregations today, we find the need to identify ourselves as non-institutional, that is, our congregation does not support man-made institutions in doing the work of the church. At this time we do not have elders, which is the scriptural organization of oversight within the local congregation (I Timothy 3, Titus 1).

Peter says in I Peter 3:15 "always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you". It is our desire to do exactly that, in the ways that we are able.

We have correspondence courses available, as well as study guides and lessons on CD and on cassette. We will be glad to provide these to you at no charge. We have a 15 minute radio program at 8:05AM every Sunday Morning on AM 1400. If you are unable to listen in, contact us and we can send you a copy of any radio progam at no charge.

Our preacher is Brian Haines. Are you a Protestant Denomination?
No. Some consider that there are approximately 6 Christian denominations (most people only think of two, Catholic and Protestant) types; we do not qualify as any of them. Instead, we are an exact model of the church established in Acts 2 and the First Century AD. We have no roots in any denominations, although many denominations originated in the Church of Christ.

2. Why is your name "Church of Christ"?
This is one of several names used in the Bible to describe Christ's church (Rom 16:16, I Corinthians 1:2, II Corinthians 1:1, I Thessalonians 1:1, Hebrews 12:23, ). As related in another section of this website, the word "Church" means body, and we desire to be the Body of Christ (Rom 12:5, I Cor 12:27).

3. Do you believe only the Church of Christ is going to heaven?
Absolutely; it is likely that if you are part of a church, you do too. Consider that it is the case today that most churches either call themselves by the name of Church of God or Church of Christ (such as the Mormon Church, Apostolic Churches, Assembly of God, or Mennonites) or they still hold that they are a church of Christ, including the Catholic Church, the Baptist Church, the Methodist Church, and the Presbyterian Church. Very few people who claim to be Christian deny that only those who are members of the Body of Christ are sanctified (Hebrews 10:10). Paul made it clear that any church founded by a man cannot save (I Corinthians 1:12). So most churches that are not universalist in doctrine (Universalism is a doctrine which teaches everyone is saved whatever they think or do) would probably agree, only those who are with Christ are saved. So a better question is "Do you believe you are the only Church of Christ". There can be other churches of Christ, but not as any kind of denomination, which is defined as something of another name. We believe that any church that is modeled after the first century church of Christ is Christ's church. This can be identified and confirmed in that the Bible is the only source of doctrine (Romans 6:17, I Timothy 1:3, 6:3, II Timothy 3:16, II John 1:9), Christ is the only head (Ephesians 5:23), Elders/Bishops in each congregation are the only overseers, and only of their congregations (Titus 1:5-9), and believers are determined or saved not by men but by obedience to God's pattern of salvation. They call themselves by no other name but the name of Christ (I Corinthians 1:13), both personally (I Peter 4:16) and as a church (Romans 16:16, I Corinthians 1:2).

4. Do you believe you are saved by Faith or by Works?
The Bible is clear that we are not saved by Faith alone (James 2:24) nor by Works alone (Titus 3:5). We are saved by Faith that is demonstrated by works (Hebrews 11, James 2:26). Both James and Paul tell us this by using the example of Abraham and his obedience to God's commands (James 2:21-23, Romans 4:9). Paul uses Abraham to show that God called his action Faith, and said it was his Faith that saved him, while James points out it was called Faith because he performed what God commanded. We teach just as the Bible teaches it: we are saved by Faith, but Faith is defined by our performing what God has commanded (which are the works James speaks about). Sometimes we are asked why Paul seems to tell us works are not valueble for righteousness in Galatians or Romans; when Paul speaks about the "works" or "works of the law", he is always speaking about the works of the Old Testament Law of Moses. If you look in passages in Galatians, Romans or Ephesians, you will see he speaks about Old Law requirements that are not required to be kept by Christians. Ironically, many of the people who espouse salvation without works turn to the Old Law for justification on modern doctrines.

5. Why do you have communion every Sunday, and only Sunday?
The Bible records that Jesus commanded us to regularly partake of the Lord's Supper/ Communion (I Corinthians 11:23-26), and the only time the church of the first century did so was on Sunday (Acts 20:17). We also only take up a collection on Sunday, since this is the only day we have been given to do so (I Corinthians 16:2).

6. Why do you not have musical instruments in worship?
The first century church did not use them, but instead sang without accompaniment (in musical terms this is called Acapella). The only command from God for music in the church is to sing (Ephesians 5:19, Colossians 3:16, James 5:13). The only examples by Christ or the apostles was of singing (Mark 14:26, Acts 16:25). To add musical instruments would be to add to what God has instructed us (II John 9, Revelation 22:18). In some cases churches use the Old Testament as justification for using musical instruments; if we use Old Testament examples for New Testament worship, we will have a serious problem. If we turn to the Old Testament for our justification, we are required to live by all of it (Galatians 5:3, James 2:10). We do not teach that musical instruments are of themselves sinful, but the Bible teaches that adding to what God has authorized for worship is sinful.

7. Why do you not use the Old Testament?
It is untrue to say we do not use the Old Testament, since it was given for our understanding (Romans 15:4) and is of great profit to study. However, it is true to say that the Old Testament is no longer God's law, since it was nailed to the cross (Colossians 2:14), and is not longer of effect (Romans 6:14-15, 10:4). Our new law/covenant/testament is the Law of Liberty (James 1:25, 2:12), or the Law of Christ (Romans 8:2). Christ said this law was all that He has commanded (Matthew 28:20) and all that His apostles say on His authority (Matthew 18:18, Ephesians 2:20, II Peter 3:2). This is called the New Testament. Jesus died to create a new testament (Romans 7:4-5) or covenant (Jeremiah 31:31/Hebrews 8:8-13, Hebrews 7:22); it makes invalid His death to attempt to return to the old one (Galatians 1:6, 3:1-4; 3:20-26).

8. Why do you not support institutions/organizations that do good works?
We do not teach that human organizations/institutions are wrong; if anything we should support them as individuals. The situation is that a local Church has no authority to financially support human organizations. The Bible shows no example of the first century church giving money to support or help any group of people other than Christians; to the contrary, there are commands and examples of individuals doing just that (Acts 10:2, James 1:27). God commands the individual Christian to do good to all men, especially those of the brotherhood (Galatians 6:10).

What Does the Bible Say About Church?

There are a lot of different churches in the world; so many that the word "church" means just about anything in our language. But when Jesus said He was going to build a church (Matt 16:18-20), He did not mean the confusion that is called denominationalism, or the "Do As You Please" religion of today. Instead, He sought to establish a church that would be His own people, called to be Saints (Rom 1:7), and would be the Kingdom of God (I Tim 6:13-16). Jesus told Pilate that he was here to "bear witness" (DIE) to establish His Kingdom (John 18:37). The Kingdom Jesus built when He arose from the grave (Matt 28:18) and when His apostles opened the doors of it (Acts 2) is here on earth today in the form of His church (Col 1:12-13) . It is also more figuratively called Mount Zion, the City of God, the Heavenly Jerusalem (Heb 12:22-23) and the Bride of Christ (Eph 5:31, Rev 21:9-10)

The word Church means "a called out body" in Greek, the language the Bible was written in. The church is the Body of Christ (Eph 5:30-32), so we who are In Christ (Gal 3:27) are now the Body of Christ (I Cor 12:27), hence this is why we are called the Church of Christ (Rom 16:16)

The Church was not designed as entertainment or a social club, but, purchased with Christ's blood, it is meant to serve God. When David ordered his son Solomon to build God's Temple in the Old Testament, he reminded him that the Temple is for God, not for man (I Chron 29:1). Too often today church's pattern themselves around pleasing men, not God.

The Church has four duties to perform: Worship of God, Edification of the Saints, Benevolence of the Saints, and Evangelism of the Lost (Eph 4:12). These last three are typically described as the work of the Church. The Church was not designed to be any more than this or less than this. Therefore, we support no human institutions that attempt to do the work of the church; we also do not build any associations outside of the local congregation. The Church Jesus built 2000 years ago (Matt 16:16) is still capable of doing everything God intended to accomplish.

The only source of authority for the Church that Jesus Built is in the Bible that God gave us. II Tim 3:16-17 tells us that the Bible contains everything we need to be right with God. Rev 22:18-19 tells us that adding to or taking away from God's Word is error. God's revelation was finished with the Bible (Jude 3), and nothing new is from God. It is the New Testament that has the authority for today; the Old Testament was "nailed to the cross" (Col 2:14).

What Does the Bible Say About Salvation?

The Bible reveals that God has a plan for salvation. It is clear that God has done his part in this plan, through Jesus Christ, who died on the cross for the sins of the world (John 3:16). But what about your part?

Step 1 - Hearing
The word of God allows us to see what our true state is with our Creator. The word of God teaches that God is our Creator, and that He is all powerful and all knowing. Without first hearing the word of God we would never know we were sinners and that the result of our sin is spiritual death. Sin is transgression of God's law (James 2:8-10). Please notice what Romans 3:23 says about our condition - "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." Now consider what Romans 6:23 says - "For the wages of sin is death..." Taken together, these two Bible verses tell us we are in trouble. We've sinned, and the penalty of our sin is spiritual death (separation from God). Without hearing we wouldn't know of Jesus' sacrifice for our sins and our need for Him.
The apostle Paul says in Romans 10:17 - "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." Take time today to read from God's word, and hear the creator of the World's message to man, and the good news (the gospel) contained therein. Read about the news that Jesus Christ, God's only begotten Son died on the cross. Why did Jesus come to earth to die on the cross? Look in the mirror and you'll see one good reason. "He loved me and gave Himself up for me" Galatians 2:20. You and I must wholly trust in Him to do for me what I can not do for myself -- atone for my sin. He died my death and paid my debt (Mark 10:45). Read some more of God's word and realize that there are more steps than just hearing, to be right with God . . .

Step 2 – Believing
Just hearing the word of God doesn't save you. We must believe what we hear. Paul preached about the "faith in Christ" (Acts 20:21). This faith comes through reading and believing what you read from the Word of God. If we don't believe what we read in the word of God, we are not likely to obey the Bible's commands, which is God's law. In John 8:24 Jesus says - "...if ye believe not that I am He, ye shall die in your sins." But belief is not enough! Notice what Jesus said in John 1:12 - "But as many as received (believed) him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God...." In other words, belief allows us "to become" children of God but does NOT by itself accomplish the task. In Matthew 7:21 we learn that just declaring our belief is not enough - we must DO what God requires of us - "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven." A sincere faith will accept Christ's Word in humble obedience every step of the way (Romans 10:17; 2 Corinthians 5:7; Hebrews 5:9; Ephesians 1:22-23). At the point of faith, you now have the right to proceed in turning to Christ for salvation. According to God's word, you are not converted and saved yet (James 2:19), there is more yet. . . .

Step 3 – Repenting
Sin may be attractive and even enjoyable, but it is what separates us from God according to Isaiah 59:2- "...your iniquities (sins) have separated between you and your God." Therefore, if we want God's forgiveness, we must be willing to repent of our sins. Repentance means "turning away from sin.", or literally "a total change of mind."; it is not just saying you are sorry, but changing what you are doing that is wrong. We must do this and make the constant effort to sin no more. In Luke 13:3 Jesus said this about the need for repentance- "...except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish." Please notice also what is said in Acts 17:30 - "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent." Are you willing to turn away from sin? To renounce sinful behaviors and thoughts and turn to the Lord? If so, then you are on the road to salvation, but you have not done all the Lord commands. Repenting isn't just being sorry you got caught in doing something bad. It's godly sorrow for your sin (2 Corinthians 7:9f). You should want to turn away from it. But just turning away from sin is not yet enough . . . . . . .

Step 4 – Confessing
Those who wish to be saved must confess their faith in Jesus. It was Jesus himself who said in Matthew 10:32- "Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven." Later, the apostle Paul said in Romans 10:10- "For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." Finally, notice the Ethiopian eunuch's confession when Philip asked if he believed (Acts 8:37)- "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God." You must confess with your mouth the divine Lordship of Christ before or with a view unto salvation from your sins(Romans 10:9-10). "Confess" means "to say the same thing." You declare the same thing about Jesus that God declared of Him: "This is my Beloved Son" (Matthew 3:17). It is a statement of the conviction of your heart, a public test of your intended loyalty. Others do not know what you really believe in your heart until you freely declare it. But confession alone is not enough (Acts 7:36-38), as there is one more action that brings you into God's grace . . . .

Step 5 – Baptism
There is much religious confusion about baptism. Some think baptism isn't necessary, others believe we are saved before we are baptized. Note three things the Bible says baptism does -
1. Baptism shows our good conscience to God according to 1 Peter 3:21- "...baptism doth also now save us - not the putting away of the filth of the flesh - but the answer of a good conscience toward God."
2. Baptism washes away our sins according to Acts 22:16- "...arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins...."
3. Baptism gives us entry "into" Christ according to Galatians 3:27- "For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ."
Since Paul says baptism puts us "into" Christ, then before we are baptized we are "outside" of Christ and lost.In 1 Peter 3:20-21 the apostle Peter makes this comparison of Noah's salvation in the ark, and our salvation by baptism- "...God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now SAVE us." For people to say they are saved before baptism is to say that Noah and his family were saved before the flood! Noah's obedience and work did not earn him salvation, but if he had not worked to build the ark, he would have been lost! In the same way, baptism does not earn us salvation but we must be baptized to be saved. Peter says "baptism doth also now save us."

Baptism alone is not what saves. Salvation is because we have heard the Word (only the Bible, not some other doctrine) and believe in God (Hebrews 11:6), and obey what God has commanded (Matthew 7:21) in confession, repentence, and emersion in water. That brings us into God's grace (Ephesians 2:8).

Once we have entered God's saving Grace, what do we do to stay there (I Corinthians 10:12)?

Step 6 - Living a life that is pleasing to God
Once your sins have been washed away, you must live your life in such a way as to be pleasing to God. In the Bible this is expressed in various ways, including "walking in the light" 1 John 1:7, "Abiding in the doctrine of Christ " II John 9, "Putting on the New Man" Eph 4:24, "holding to the confession of our hope" Heb 10:23, or "working out your salvation" Php 2:12. This means a life that shuns the deeds of the flesh and darkness (Galations 5:17-21), and produces a fruit of the Spirit (Galations 5:22-24). Many false doctrines exist that teach once you have been saved, you are always saved. The Bible clearly teaches that one can fall away from God after becoming a person who has followed his word and been baptized (Heb 2:1, 4:1, 6:6, 10:26, 12:25, I Cor 15:2, Gal 5:4, Rom 11:20-21, Jam 5:12, 2 Pet 3:17).

If you have a desire to obey God and to be saved, please contact us. We will assist you in any way possible to help you follow God's plan of salvation. If you wish to study these points more in depth, we will be glad to assist you however we can.

10 Things You Need To Know About Baptism

Is being baptized important? Most churches practice some form of baptism, and maybe you have been baptized. When we talk about baptism, we are usually referring the the process of being immersed into water; consider how Jesus was baptized in Matthew 3:3 “Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him.......vs 16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water”. Here is a list of the things you ought to know that the Bible says about being baptized.

1. Being baptized culminates the process of salvation. At the point you are baptized into water is when you are saved.
1 Peter 3:21 There is also an antitype which now saves us--baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

2. Being baptized is when your sins are washed away. That is what is called sanctification (being made holy) and justification (being made righteous). It is the same thing as calling on the name of the Lord.
Acts 22:16 'And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.'
Titus 3:5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration (Literally “born again”) and renewing of the Holy Spirit........ 7 that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

3. Jesus said baptism is the only way to see the Kingdom of Heaven
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."......... 5 Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

4. The Old Testament fore-shadowed Baptism in at least three places:
First, when Noah was saved through water; death was covered up in the water and Noah was preserved
1 Peter 3:20 ......when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. 21 There is also an antitype (foreshadow) which now saves us--baptism .....
Second, when Israel was saved through water; they passed throuh the Red Sea, to the promised land, and death (in the form of Pharoah's army) was covered up in the water (Exodus 14)
When Naaman was baptized for the removal of the Leprosy of his flesh (II Kings 5); remember, than sickness of the flesh (uncleanliness) is a metaphor for sin (Matt 9:5-9)

5. Baptism is the Process of Putting on Christ, and is the Process of Being Put In Christ
Galatians 3:27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body--whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free--and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.

6. Jesus Himself Commands that All Men Be Baptized FOR Salvation
Mark 16:16 "He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.
Matthew 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

7. No One In the Book of Acts (the New Testament Church) was saved apart from Baptism, or before being Baptized
Acts 2:38: The multitudes at Pentecost were Baptized and THEN saved
Acts 8:15: The people of Samaria Believed and Were Baptized and were then Saved (Mk 16:16)
Acts 8:38: The Ethiopian eunuch confessed Jesus as Lord, THEN was Baptized and THEN was saved
Acts 9:18 & 22:16: Paul was visited by Jesus, then prayed, THEN was Baptized and THEN Saved
Acts 11:14&10:48: Cornelius WAS NOT SAVED UNTIL he was BAPTIZED as Peter Commanded
Acts 16:33: A Philippian jailer was saved when he was Baptized
Acts 18:8: The Corinthians heard, believed (Rom 10:10) and were Baptized
Acts 19:3-5: The Ephesians were baptized again into the correct Baptism for Salvation

8. Being Baptized takes us to the Cross of Jesus; it makes His death our death to sin, and it makes His resurrection our resurrection (being Born Again)
Romans 6:3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. 7 For he who has died has been freed from sin.
Colossians 2:12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses,

9. There is only one baptism. When we are baptized in Water, we are at the same time receiving the Gift of the Holy Spirit and the Atoning Blood of Jesus Christ (Spirit, Water and Blood)
1 John 5:8 And there are three that bear witness (to our salvation, per vs. 13) on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.
Ephesians 4:5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism;
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

10. Baptism is About the Heart's Response to God
Hebrews 10:22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
1 Peter 3:21 There is also an antitype which now saves us--baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God),

Summation:
In Baptism the Bible Says: You are Saved; You are Put In the body of Christ; you have Put On Christ; your Sins are Washed Away; you Receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit; you are Born Again; you are Justified; you are Buried With Christ

So, by logical deduction, those who have not been baptized: Are NOT saved; Are NOT in the Body of Christ; have NOT put on Christ; have NOT had their sins washed away; have NOT received the Gift of the Holy Spirit; have NOT been Born Again; have NOT been Justified; have NOT been Buried with Christ

Links

Here are some links to sites that you might find helpful in studying the Bible or in locating a church or information.

We assume no responsibility for what information or material resides on the websites that are on this list.
